Answering Your Water Pump Questions

Submersible well pump install

What is the average cost to replace a submersible well pump?

Over time, every submersible well pump needs to be replaced. I’ve had customers with well pumps that go out anywhere from every couple of years to over 30, depending on the quality of the pump and water in the well. If you’re looking for an average, most easily researchable sites calculate about $1,700-$1,800 for parts and labor to replace a well pump. The reality is though that that price can vary hundreds to even thousands of dollars depending on your location, depth of well or type of pump. That price may also not factor the cost of other materials besides the pump like wire or piping if either of those need to be replaced.

So how does RPS stack up? The easiest way to think about it is that for strictly our well pump/starter kits, nearly all our 0.5 HP - 1 HP residential well pumps are under four figures. You won’t find a better price for the quality, considering we use high grade 304 stainless steel centrifugal pumps with brushless motors. Combine that with our 2-year warranty and lifetime service guarantee, and you’ve got high-quality service at an affordable price.

The sticking point for many people here, though, is their uncertainty about if they have the skills to replace their old well pump. Well technicians can charge anywhere from $45-$200 an hour, surely they have some skills that the average person just can’t learn, right? The reality is, most well replacements are simple, requiring a basic understanding of plumbing and wiring. Our full color, 48-page manual goes through each component of the well replacement in detail, with easily understandable diagrams. We also have a team of post-sales experts whose job is to walk you through questions you may have during installation that may not feel clear.

If you don’t need to replace any of your accessories or end up purchasing our One-and-Done Kit, these are the 7 tools and parts you’ll need:

  • Teflon Tape (also in our One-and-Done Kit0
  • Electrical Tape (also in our One-and-Done Kit)
  • Pressure Switch (if using pressure tank or pressure system)
  • Wire Strippers
  • Voltmeter
  • Flat and Phillips Screwdriver
  • Lighter or heatgun for heatshrinks, heating poly pipe for tighter hose clamps

  • If you’re saving a minimum of $700-$800 for an install that normally only takes an afternoon, and all you need on your end are seven key components, we think most people see that as a great return for their money and labor.

It is true that there’s work involved here, and not everyone feels comfortable with electricity or water, especially when it’s their own home. What we can promise on our end is friendly, reliable, customer service, with no pressure to buy when you hop on the phone with us. We often have customers look through our pump curves, learning page, and customer reviews to help them better understand where we’re coming from. Our mission from the beginning has been to arm customers with the knowledge they need to empower themselves and save money while still purchasing a high quality piece of material.

If you have further questions, or are still wondering about specific pricing or quotes we can make, call us at (855)-560-5670 or email us at help@ruralpowersystems.com. We love chatting with customers, shooting the breeze about well pumps, and we’ll be sure to set you in the right direction with your install!
